Executive Director’s Letter

May 3, 2022

In May, we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month. Recognizing the many contributions Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made to our culture and society, this month is especially meaningful given that these communities are experiencing escalated acts of hatred and racism in our country. Join us in learning more through special exhibitions and initiatives throughout the country and right here in the Baltimore Area.

The 4th annual Asia North community exhibition and festival continues through May 28 and celebrates Baltimore’s Charles North (a.k.a. Station North) neighborhood’s constantly evolving identities as a Koreatown, arts district, and creative center. Partners include the Asian Arts and Culture Center at Towson University, Central Baltimore Partnership, Motorhouse, and Stillpointe Theater.

For ongoing programming, the Asian Arts and Culture Center at Towson University engages the university and surrounding communities in cross-cultural dialogue through a broad range of artistic and cultural learning experiences related to Asia. Their programs increase understanding of the world’s diverse cultures, challenge stereotypes, strengthen cultural competency, and offer unique perspectives on creativity and the human experience.

Needing self care? The Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center has organized an online Care Package. The Package is a collection of creative offerings by artists, writers, and scholars who they have collaborated with in recent years. It contains a range of approaches to addressing uncertainty, anxiety, and grief through vision, reflection, and healing. Most have been exhibited in past programs, but are only now being made widely accessible.

Let's all stand together to fight hate and build understanding,

Jeannie
