The UALP Community Mentorship Project is a partnership with a group of young people, aged 13-18. The group is called “Save A Dope Boy” and it is based in the heart of the area where the recent Baltimore Uprising took place.
The current Urban Arts Leadership Program Cohort have become mentors to the group as they undertake a short-term, three-prong project that will include deep discussion, lessons shared, and end with a tour of the new Smithsonian African American Museum of History and Culture. 10 emerging arts leaders working with, being available to, and answering questions from 10 young artists is a powerful concept.
“Save A Dope Boy”, lead by Tiffany Welch, is a group based in the Upton Community of West Baltimore that provides positive and constructive alternatives to young people that might otherwise be lured into dangerous street occupations. The young people explore their creative interests and are also placed in paid positions at the Marketplace on Pennsylvania Avenue.
