- Provide visionary leadership for the museum’s fundraising, donor relations and communication strategies. S/he will develop a coordinated and strategic fundraising program in support of the museum’s annual operations. When needed, the DOD will develop and coordinate Annual Giving, Capital or Endowment campaigns with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees.
- Hires and manages appropriate staff in Development and Marketing & Communications. Working with staff, the Director of Development establishes performance expectations and goals of his/her staff. All activities are directed at maximizing operating and project revenue for the museum. The DOD ensures that Development staff maintains databases, donor records and timely correspondence with donors.
- With the Executive Director, sets fundraising goal for museum, assesses potential revenue for proposed museum projects, develops strategies for the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gifts, makes donor calls with Executive Director or Board member, and ensures timely and accurate reporting of outcomes.
- Ensures accurate and effective presentation of projects, project budgets, in grant proposals, sponsorship packages, and other modes of communication.
- Supervises development staff in order to maintain database, donor records, and timely correspondence with donors.
- Provides guidance to the Manager of Marketing & Communications to:
- Produce and coordinate all PR and marketing materials.
- Produce and share multi-media stories about museum experiences.
- Identify and reach out to local businesses and organizations for cross-promotional, underwriting, and partnership opportunities.
- Development of goals and strategies for Groups Sales.
- Represents the museum in local and national associations of Development and/or Marketing & Communications Committees.
- The Director of Development develops and manages the budgets for her department to include budgets for all Development and Marketing & Communications activities.
- The individual compiles various monthly reports for the Executive Director and Board of Trustees.
Internally works with:
- The Executive Director’s senior management team in the development, articulation, and tracking of museum-wide development and marketing & communications strategies.
- The Director of Finance to ensure that all revenue is accurately recorded in the records of the museum.
- Curatorial and Education staff in the development of major grant and fundraising activities.
- Special events staff in the preparation of donor and special events designed to develop closer relationships that encourage increased support of museum projects and operations.
- The museum’s Board of Trustees in the development of a fundraising strategy for both the Board and prospective donors.
- Other staff as required.
Externally works with:
Major donors throughout the State of Maryland, as well as national donors who have an interest in the Reginald F. Lewis Museum.
The local and national philanthropic communities in order to keep the Reginald F. Lewis apprised about the latest trends in giving.
Skills and Qualifications
This position requires ten (10) years of development experience with demonstrated ability to secure major gift, grants and government support. Knowledge of regional philanthropic community (individuals, corporations and foundation), national foundations, government funders, and political structure a necessity. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to articulate to the museum’s various constituents, its mission, history, position and importance to the state of Maryland. The individual must have strong interpersonal, supervisory, organizational and planning skills. Computer proficiency and knowledge of Raiser’s Edge, Blackbaud, Altru development databases a necessity.
The individual must have a strong strategic methodology.
