Leo Lionni published the beloved children’s fable Frederick in 1967. Over the years the story and his gorgeous, but simple collage illustrations of a day dreaming mouse continue to resonate. Frederick is scolded by friends and family for not being more industrious in his preparations for winter. What they learn as food runs low and temperatures drop is that Frederick was prepared. He contributed more than they could imagine through his stories that brought them through the last long days of winter.

As 12 young boys and their soccer coach waited for help in a cold dark cave in Thailand, I think about how they sustained themselves. Who was their Frederick? Did they all contribute stories about what they loved best about home—food, comfort, affection, and warmth? I hope so. They certainly have much to tell and teach us now.

I have been so inspired by the news of the boys’ journey and the herculean efforts made to bring them safely back to their families. Let’s continue to tell our stories and care for one another in the same ways.
