The Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance (GBCA) board of directors announces the election of five new members.
It is my pleasure to introduce the GBCA Board of Directors class of 2017. We are delighted to welcome them to the GBCA family.
Christopher Bedford, Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director, Baltimore Museum of Art
Christopher Bedford is the tenth director of the Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA), which is renowned for its outstanding collections of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Recognized as an innovative and dynamic leader, Bedford served as director of the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University for four years prior to joining the BMA. He was appointed as Commissioner for the U.S. Pavilion for the 2017 Venice Biennale. His previous experience includes curatorial positions at the Wexner Center for the Arts at The Ohio State University, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and J. Paul Getty Museum. Born in Scotland and raised in the United States and the U.K., Bedford has a B.A. from Oberlin College, an M.A. from Case Western Reserve University, and has studied in the doctoral programs at the University of Southern California and the Courtauld Institute of Art.
Fred Bronstein, Dean, Peabody Institute
Fred Bronstein serves as the first dean of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. Under his leadership, important new initiatives implemented include: plans to establish a center for music and medicine; “Peabody Pop-Ups” that provide students with experience in community engagement; Dean’s Incentive Grants for faculty and students designed to spur innovative work; and Dean’s Symposiums that bring to campus innovative artists and cultural leaders to talk about trends in the classical music field. Prior to Peabody, Bronstein served as president of the St. Louis Symphony, Omaha Symphony, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. As a performer, he toured for eight years and could be heard on New World Records as part of Aequalis, a chamber group he co-founded. Bronstein is an alumnus of Boston University, Manhattan School of Music, and the State University of New York, Stony Brook. Most recently, Dr. Bronstein was named by Musical America as one of thirty top “Innovators” in 2016.
Todd Marcus, Musician/Composer, Executive Director of Intersection of Change
Bass clarinetist, composer, and bandleader Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus their work primarily on the bass clarinet. Marcus actively leads small ensembles such as the Todd Marcus Quartet, Trio, and Duo as well as his nine-piece band. Marcus is the recipient of a Baker Artist Award in 2014. Marcus balances his music career with his work as executive director of Intersection of Change, a nonprofit addressing poverty-related issues in West Baltimore. The organization runs an art program for children and adults, a recovery program for women overcoming drug addiction, and has achieved significant community revitalization by renovating abandoned buildings and vacant lots.
CJay Philip, Artistic Director, Dance & Bmore
CJay Philip is artistic director of Dance & Bmore, a Baltimore-based ensemble with a unique fusion of movement, music, and spoken word in socially conscious works that are both interactive and empowering. Before moving to Baltimore, Philip began her career as a member of Maude Baum & Company and Burundi African Dance Troupe in upstate New York. She has made several Broadway debuts and toured as Lorrell in Dreamgirls and Paulette in Legally Blonde. Philip has written three works for the stage and has also directed and choreographed dozens of musicals and performances. Philip has worked as an arts educator serving as program director for the HOPE for Kids School of the Arts in New York City and the Baltimore Story Tree Gang. Philip was the founding director of the Children’s Theater Production Company at the Gordon Center for the Performing Arts and is a regular teaching artist at Baltimore’s Centerstage. Philip is the recipient of a Baker Artist Award in 2013, a Baltimore Social Innovators Award, a Dance Break Award, and is a Kennedy Center Citizen Artist Fellow.
Jonathan K. Waller, Managing Director, Everyman Theatre
Jonathan K. Waller is the managing director of Everyman Theatre, a non-profit organization with an Equity resident acting company dedicated to presenting high quality plays that are affordable and accessible to everyone. Prior to Everyman, Waller served as the director of external affairs for New York’s Vineyard Theatre. His broad experience includes work in theatrical licensing at Samuel French, Inc. and Music Theatre International. Also a composer and lyricist, Waller's The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley received a 60+ city national tour and is now licensed across the country through Music Theatre International. As an educator, Waller has taught Theatre Management and Administration at Towson University. He currently serves on Baltimore’s Market Center Merchant Association’s marketing committee and, in 2017, will proudly join the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC) Leadership program.
