Executive Director's Letter - 12/19/23

Happy 22nd birthday GBCA!

On December 17, 2001, the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance (GBCA) was officially incorporated in the State of Maryland. This action was the result of years of study and community input that started in 1997. In June 2001, a group of like-minded creative leaders joined forces to organize the Greater Baltimore Cultural Summit and to report back to the community with recommendations about ways to unify and strengthen the cultural sector. Since that time, GBCA has continued the core programming and convening which reflect its founding values. At the same time, we have continued to innovate and respond to the changing needs of our constituents. In celebration of its founding and the milestones noted here we hope you will consider renewing or making a first-time gift before year-end.

Urban Arts Leadership: Now in its tenth anniversary year, Urban Arts Leadership (UAL) works toward greater equity in the arts, culture, and heritage sectors. With over 50 alumni who have completed training and fellowship placements, UAL maintains its commitment to equitable practices in the workplace and supporting the careers of promising emerging leaders of color.

Culture Fly: GBCA has managed a region-wide events calendar for over 15 years. Originally founded as the Baltimore Fun Guide, the Culture Fly Calendar was redesigned (and rebranded) in 2014. Now presented by PNC, it promotes thousands of events every year and drives countless audience members to events in the region.

Jobs Plus: Created as a go-to listing of arts and culture jobs in the region, over 40,000 job seekers and dozens of employers use the site annually to find employment and fill openings. As a core destination for the cultural workforce, Jobs Plus remains one of the most visited pages on the GBCA website.

Baker Artist Portfolios: Founded in 2009, the Baker Artist Portfolios celebrated its 15th Anniversary this year. Created in partnership with the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund, the portfolios and associated awards have recognized nearly 150 artists in the Baltimore region with more than $1.4 million awarded.

Here’s to our amazing cultural community!
