Executive Director's Letter - 4/25/23

This is it! Applications to Urban Arts Leadership (UAL) close on Sunday, April 30. If you have been procrastinating, it’s time to get it done. If you're someone with a network of talented rising leaders of color, there is still time to introduce them to the benefits of UAL and the opportunity to be part of an inspiring cohort. You can find out more and direct applicants to this link to apply.

It’s always a pleasure to highlight the many accomplishments of UAL alumni. Yesterday, in my inbox, was an article about artist Megan Lewis. This Friday in Hollywood, Los Angeles, Mashonda Tifrere opens “Soft Landings,” Lewis' solo exhibition featuring 15 paintings based on portrait photographs taken by the artist. The show is presented by Tifrere's ArtLeadHER, an organization working to create equity for women in the arts. So, if you happen to be in LA, be sure to look it up!

Congratulations are also in order for the finalists for the 18th annual Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize, which is sponsored in part by the generosity of the Maryland State Arts Council and is a program of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA). The 2023 finalists are Abigail Lucien, Kyrae Dawaun, and Nekisha Durrett. This year, the Sondheim Art Prize will award $30,000 to the selected artist. BOPA will also award two residencies to finalists not selected for the prize: a six-week, fully funded residency at Civitella Ranieri in the Umbria region of Italy, and a residency at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower in Baltimore. The three finalists will have their work exhibited in the Walters Art Museum (WAM) this summer as part of the Sondheim Finalists’ Exhibition.

Did you know that you can pursue teacher certification while working full time as an arts educator in Baltimore City Public Schools? Join us today, April 25, from 6-7:30p.m. at Baltimore Unity Hall, for an Arts Educator Recruitment Event for artists and certified arts teachers! Are you interested in teaching for City Schools but think you can’t because you lack the certification? Learn how you can become a certified teacher while working! Are you graduating this year or interested in transferring from another district? Salaries start at $53,898. The event is presented by City Schools, Arts Every Day, Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance, and Arts Education in Maryland Schools. You can follow this link to register.

Have a great week,

Jeannie
