Executive Director's Letter 7/26/22

Executive Director's Letter

July 26, 2022

Last week’s Primary Election set the stage for the General Election on Tuesday, November 8, 2022. In addition to selecting the Gubernatorial candidates, Wes Moore (Democrat) and Dan Cox (Republican), for the first time ever voters in Baltimore City selected candidates for School Board Membership.

Prior to this year, Baltimore City was the only jurisdiction in Maryland whose entire School Board of Commissioners was appointed/unelected. This year, the Board will expand from 10 to 12 seats, with the two additional seats being elected rather than appointed. They will be ELECTED FROM the top four candidates who won the Primary Election. The candidates are Ashley E. Esposito, April Christina Curley, Kwame Kenyatta-Bey, and Salimah Jasani.

Why is this important? The Baltimore City Board of School Commissioners votes on many big decisions that impact our students, schools, and communities. From setting priorities and reviewing curriculum to approving the annual budget, the Board, with advice of the CEO, determines the district’s educational, management, and educational policies. As parents, educators, arts advocates, students, tax payers, and community members, it is crucial that we take time to get to know each candidate to inform how we vote. Thank you to Arts Every Day for providing this important information.

• Early voting will be held for 8 days and begin on Thursday, October 27, 2022 through Thursday, November 3, 2022 from 7 am until 8 pm for the Gubernatorial General Election. You can vote early at any early voting center in the county you live in.

• The Gubernatorial General Election Day is November 8, 2022. To vote in person on election days, vote at your assigned polling place.

It’s our democracy, let’s stay engaged.
