Executive Director Newsletter 5/4

Yes, today, “May the Fourth be with You,” but tomorrow is the day to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The fifth of May commemorates the Mexican army's victory over Napoleon III's French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is the opportunity to honor Mexican culture and heritage.
If you’re looking for something healthy to mark the day, here are two runs you might consider: The Cinco de Mayo Fun Run in Belair and Margaritas and Miles in Timonium. Thinking about Mother’s Day? You can get the celebration started early with the Creative Alliance Tianquiztli: A Special Day With Mama on Saturday, May 8.

May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. The Asian Arts and Culture Center at Towson University and Central Baltimore Partnership are presenting an exhibition through May 15 as part of their annual Asia North: A Celebration of Art, Culture, and Community in Baltimore’s Charles North (a.k.a. Station North). It is an apt location given that this neighborhood has experienced evolving identities as a Koreatown, arts district, and creative center.

The exhibit is on view online and in socially distanced locations throughout the Station North Arts District, including Motor House, Joe Squared, SNF Parkway Theatre, North Avenue Market, Impact Hub, and Nancy by SNAC. Featured artists include Reed Bmore, Cheng Cao, Molli Chang, Anu Das, Marlo De Lara, Gloria Tseng Fischer, Farhad Heidarian, Margaret Huey, Linda Kato, Jinyoung Koh, Sunjin Lee, Jing Ma, Hadrian Mendoza, Miki + Dolor + Van Ngo + Hsiao-Chu Hsia, Sookkyung Park, Grace Ren, Slothpotato, Nahid Tootoonchi, Anjali Wells, Andersen Woof, and Nikita Yogaraj.

Asia North promotes the work of regional AAPI artists, provides space for sharing diverse artistic expressions, and fosters collaboration among diverse community-centered organizations. There is a virtual workshop this Friday, May 7--Making Stories Where We’re From. This is a great time to express our solidarity with the Asian, Asian Pacific Islander community.
