Executive Director’s Letter 12/18/18

It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2018 and start working on those resolutions for the New Year. But before we do, let’s celebrate the 17th birthday of the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance together! On December 17, 2001, after much study and community conversation, GBCA was incorporated “…to further and promote the interests of artists and arts organizations in the Baltimore area…” You can help us mark this auspicious occasion AND the closing of 2018 by making a contribution to ensure our advocacy work and programs like Urban Arts Leadership, JobsPlus, Culture Fly, Space Finder, and so many others are able to thrive. It’s so easy; just click here to make a secure contribution online.

If you are a member, I hope you will consider helping GBCA meet a $10,000 Member Challenge from the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund. Every dollar you give over and above your dues will be matched 100%--talk about a great way to increase the mileage of your gift.

Recently, I was invited to discuss arts, culture, and equity in Baltimore during a segment of WYPR's Life in the Balance with Aaron Henkin. While I encourage you to listen to the entire wonderful show that features Lady Brion among others), if you're short on time, my interview starts about 31 minutes into the show.

It was so great to see several hundred of our friends last week during the GBCA Holiday Happy Hour at the Frederick Douglas-Isaac Meyers Pavilion. Check out pictures from the event on Baltimore Snap. Hopefully, we captured your smiling face :) Special thanks to Ed Towles for sharing his exhibition: Frederick Douglass Bicentennial and to the Living Classrooms Foundation for helping to make it all happen. See below to find out if you won the raffle!

Important information about the Baker Artist Portfolios! This weekend, there were so many artists working on the site that for the very first time, we ran out of space! The problem was resolved, and GBCA has extended the deadline until Thursday, December 20 at 5PM pm to make sure all artists have plenty of time to finish their entries.

All my best,

Jeannie

P.S. You won’t want to miss the upcoming showcase of Baker Artist performers: An Afternoon of Artistic Excellence. The event is produced by Contemporary Arts with the support of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund in partnership with GBCA. Among the performers will be Carl Grubbs, Lafayette Gilchrist, and Joyce Scott. Click here to see the full line up and reserve your tickets. The event will take place at The Walters Art Museum on Saturday, January 26, 2019.
