WOW! It Has Been An Amazing Week For Artists In The Baltimore Region

WOW! It has been an amazing week for artists in the region. GBCA has awarded over $150,000 to the 14 winners of the Baker Artists Awardes and Rubys Artist Project Grants.

First, congratulations to the 2016 Baker Artist Awardees! The legendary Joyce J. Scott is the inaugural winner of the $50,000 Mary Sawyers Imboden Prize. Author Jen Grow is the winner of the $20,000 Mary Sawyers Baker Prize.

Filmmaker Matt Porterfield is the winner of the $5,000 Nancy Haragan Award. Choreographer/performer Naoko Maeshiba is the winner of the $5,000 Board of Governors Award. And painter Bill Schmidt winner of the $5,000 Semmes G. Walsh Award!

These five artists exemplify a mastery of craft, commitment to excellence, and a unique and compelling vision. Their work will be displayed at an exhibition at theBaltimore Museum of Art from July 31 - September 7, 2016. Learn more about these artists and the Baker Artist Awards here. GBCA is grateful to the staff and Board of Govenors of the William G. Baker, Jr. Memorial Fund for their support of this program.

Next, more congratulations go to the 2016 Rubys grantees in media arts and performing arts: Theo Anthony, Erick Antonio Benitez, Jeff Carey Temple Croker, Amberly Alene Ellis, Margaret Rorison, Adam Rosenblatt, Paul Rucker, and Julia Kim Smith.

These nine regional artists have been selected to receive over $70,000 in grants to support creative new work. GBCA is grateful to the Robert W. Deutsch Foundationfor their vision and support of this program. Learn more about the Rubys program and these artists' projects here.

The breadth of creativity, artistic excellence, and community engagement represented in this work by these winners and grantees is extraordinary and testifies to the Baltimore region’s position as a cultural powerhouse.
