Take Advantage of Baltimore’s Amazing Museums

Executive Director's Letter
March 3, 2015

Enough already!! We are living in the world of rescheduling, school closings, shoveling, scraping, and sliding.

It’s time to liberate yourself and take advantage of Baltimore’s amazing museums. Wander the halls, enjoy special exhibitions, learn and get a bite to eat.

The Walter Art Museum is a terrific place to take your kids and explore ancient Greece, mythology and war. And speaking of war, the Arms and Armor collection was always one of my son’s favorites. The Walters' collection ranges from prehistoric times to the 19th century and spans many cultures. Major holdings are European, Turkish and Japanese, and include medieval armor, swords and daggers, crossbows, spears, halberds, flintlocks and muskets—oh, my!

The more mature among us might enjoy From Rye to Raphael: The Walters Story, which brings together for the first time an extraordinary group of art and artifacts to illustrate the intriguing stories behind the magnificent gift to Baltimore City from the Walters family.

If you haven’t made it to the recently re-opened Dorothy McIlvain Scott American Wing at the Baltimore Museum of Art, you are in for a treat. This spectacular new presentation of the grand American Wing presents more than 800 paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts intertwined, revealing surprising connections and fascinating stories. Thematic displays explore the international character of American art and Baltimore's position as a major center for art production and foreign trade from the late 18th century forward.

Also intriguing is the Front Room: Dario Robleto exhibition. Robleto's Setlists for a Setting Sun weaves together the histories of recorded light and sound in a body of poetic sculptures, prints, and cut-paper works. On March 7 at 2pm you can join artist Dario Robleto for an intimate conversation with Timothy Nohe about Robleto’s poetic use of sound. Stay for an in-gallery performance with Nohe and choreographer Renée Brozic inspired by Robleto’s work that intermixes movement with the sounds of nature and audio unearthed from archival recordings. Participate in a live remix with a range of materials, contact microphones, and an iPad.

On Wednesday, March 11, join GBCA from 12-2pm for a special Brown Bag event on the Arts and Healing, a conversation with Peter Bruun, Alonzo LaMont and Dr. Monica Lopez-Gonzalez that will be facilitated by master storyteller, Jon Spelman.

Here’s hoping for a little sunshine,
Jeannie

P.S. In other weather-related news, tonight’s Baltimore Arts Education Coalition Town Hall with City Schools CEO, Dr. Gregory Thornton is being rescheduled for later in the month. Details will be announced shortly.
