Gratitude for the Many Sacrifices of Our Military and Their Families

Executive Director's Letter
November 11, 2014

In Great Britain, today is Armistice Day and large crowds watched as 13-year-old army cadet Harry Hayes placed the last of 888,246 flowers, each representing a British military death in World War One, at the Tower of London for a stunning, visual memorial. In the United States, today is Veteran’s Day, a time to express our gratitude for the many sacrifices of our military and their families. It is also a perfect day to thank the Veteran Artist Program for their relevant and important work.

Last Thursday at University of Maryland College Park (UMD), former Robert F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts President, Michael Kaiser gave an inspiring interview withSheri Parks at UMD's Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (Sheri is Associate Dean for Research, Interdisciplinary Scholarship and Programming College of Arts and Humanitiesat UMD, commentator for WYPR and GBCA Board member). Speaking with Michael before his presentation reinforced to me the importance of what we can accomplish through his DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland's Capacity Building: Baltimore.

DeVos is bringing a free two-year training program to Baltimore for 20 cultural organizations. This is such an inspiring and potentially game-changing experience for the area’s cultural community. You can find out more when Brett Egan, President of the Institute, leads an open and free information session and fields questions from potential participants this Thursday, November 13 from 10:00–11:30am at Fred Lazarus IV Center for Graduate Studies, MICA, Baltimore. To attend or to ask any questions, please contact Tanya Surtees at [email protected] or (301) 314-0960. I hope you can be there.

You are also invited to join us this Saturday at 6:00pm at Maryland Art Place to meet the recently announced 2014-15 Urban Arts Leadership Program Fellows! It’s a busy evening, but make time to stop in to meet this amazing group and learn more about the program. To RSVP, please e-mail [email protected].

Just a reminder, there are deadlines coming up for the Critical Response Processintensive training with Liz Lerman and for the Partners for Sacred Places, Making a Home for Art in Sacred Places Survey for Baltimore.

All the best,
Jeannie
