Baltimore National Heritage Area Seeks Open Outdoors for Kids Part-time Assistant Educator

Position Overview

The Part-Time Assistant Educator will support the Open OutDoors for Kids (OOK) program, helping to deliver environmental education and history-based programming to elementary school students at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine and Hampton National Historic Site. This role assists the Lead Educator and Youth Program Coordinator in creating engaging, hands-on learning experiences that connect children to nature, history, and community. The Assistant Educator will also provide light administrative support to ensure smooth program operations.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with implementing outdoor and classroom-based lessons, activities, and field experiences.
  • Support student engagement by leading small groups, answering questions, and encouraging participation.
  • Help set up and break down program materials, supplies, and activity stations.
  • Ensure safety protocols are followed during outdoor education programs and field trips.
  • Collaborate with educators, rangers, and community partners to provide high-quality programming.
  • Maintain a welcoming, inclusive, and positive environment for all participants.
  • Support rainy-day/alternate programming as needed.
  • Minor administrative responsibilities, such as:
  • Tracking attendance and student participation.
  • Assisting with supply inventories and material preparation.
  • Helping with simple data entry, filing, or program documentation.
  • Communicating scheduling updates to staff when needed.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, and adaptable to changing program needs.
  • Comfortable handling light administrative tasks.

Qualifications Experience working with children (formal or informal education, after school, camps, community programs, etc.). Interest in environmental education, outdoor recreation, history, or youth development. The Heritage Area will cover CPR cost and training time. Benefit Package
Compensation Equivalent to $20/hour based on an estimated 1,040 hours annually (approximately 15–20 hours per week during active seasons).
