Sweet Charity Production seeks a Costume Designer

Role description: The Costume Designer will design the costumes for the Bmore Broadway Live production of Sweet Charity directed and choreographed by CJay Philip. The Costume Designer will use clothing to communicate time, place, and character, collaborating with the Director, Set Designer, and Lighting Designer to tell the story of the piece.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Attend production meetings as scheduled.
  • Read script to understand costume requirements and discuss with the Director.
  • Conduct research on historical clothing or other topics as needed.
  • Develop and communicate concepts for the costumes, which may include color palettes, mood boards, sketches, swatches, or renderings. Collaborate to refine concepts with the Director, Lighting Designer, and/or Set Designer.
  • Prepare estimates of the costs of purchase, manufacture, and/or rental of materials and costume pieces. The Producer’s decision on the costume budget shall be final. The Costume Designer shall not exceed the budget or incur any costs beyond the established budget without approval from the Producer.
  • Obtain the measurements of the Actors and attend all fittings and, if necessary, arrange for alterations.
  • Supervise the manufacturing, purchase, and/or rental of the costume pieces for the Production in consultation with and under the supervision of the Director.
  • Attend the designer run and other rehearsals as scheduled.
  • Communicate with Stage Management to facilitate sourcing of appropriate rehearsal pieces (e.g., shoes, skirts, hats).
  • Provide Stage Management, Dressers, and Actors with a copy of the costume plot. Provide logistical support for any “quick changes.”
  • Provide suggestions to Actors about hair and makeup for performances, in consultation with the Director.
  • Attend tech and dress rehearsals as scheduled by the Stage Manager.

Minimum and preferred qualifications:

  • Experience designing costumes for the stage
  • Professional, organized, personable, and collaborative
  • Ability to sew by hand and/or machine

Pay: Stipend, $600 - $800

Time: Called as needed to complete the duties of the position.

Sweet Charity Production overview:

  • Rehearsals begin: September 9th, 2023
  • Load in: November 5th, 2023
  • Tech rehearsals: November 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th
  • Performances: November 11th - 19th
  • Load out: November 20th

Load in, tech rehearsals, performances, and load out will take place at the Motor House (120 W North Ave, Baltimore, MD 21201).

Bmore Broadway Live produces Broadway shows with exceptional Baltimore talent. Under the direction of CJay Philip, the season includes a February show that highlights Black creatives on Broadway, a June music and dance concert spotlighting musical icons, and Voices of Carmen, an original Musical adaptation featuring Baltimore youth. Dance & Bmore’s Bmore Broadway Live host shows, events, and classes for all ages. @danceandbmore
