SINGLE CARROT THEATRE SEEKS PART TIME TEACHING ARTISTS

Single Carrot Theatre (SCT) is committed to creating 21st century learners by building creative and innovative thinking and tools for self expression through theatre. SCT continues to partner with Margaret Brent Elementary Middle School in a year-long program The World Of Theatre. This will be the second full school year of this program.

Single Carrot Theatre is looking for two part-time teaching artists to support this program to work 15-25 in class hours per week.

One teaching artist focused on elementary school instruction.

The teaching artist will teach The World Of Theatre M-F in the 2016/17 school year, excluding days with no school. The Resource classes (theatre, art, music, P.E.) follow a two-week rotation between resources. There are 4 total rotations over the course of the school year. The teaching artist will also work in collaboration with other teachers on arts integration activities and lead an afterschool program culminating in a production at the end of the year. The spring production will be developed with the teaching artist, school staff and Single Carrot Theatre. The class schedule is between 8am-2:30pm each day, plus afterschool not to exceed 2 days a week from 2:30-4:00. Each lesson plan will focus on collaboration, vocabulary introduction, story retention, public speaking and self-confidence through theatre techniques.

SCT teaching artists will communicate openly with teachers and staff at Margaret Brent to build curriculum connections between our work and the work of other teachers. SCT will hold students to a high standard of excellence and will create a classroom culture of high expectations.

Expectations:

  • Middle school teaching artist is expected to teach up to 3 theatre classes a daily for 5th grade though 8th grade at Margaret Brent Elementary / Middle School.
  • Elementary school teaching artist is expected to teach up to 3 theatre classes a daily for levels Pre-K though 4th grade at Margaret Brent Elementary / Middle School.
  • The teaching artist is expected to follow a curriculum structure to and adapt and develop as needed to create robust grade-appropriate lesson plans for the classes, which comply with STEAM requirements.
  • The teaching artists are expected collaborate with other teachers at the school to establish arts integration techniques and implementation.
  • The school year will culminate in a final production to be led, organized, and structured by the teaching artist in collaboration with school staff.
  • The teaching artist will be expected to arrive 25 minutes prior to the first scheduled class of the day, set up the classroom, as well as clean up the classroom at the end of the day.
  • The teaching artist will adhere to the lesson plan, but must be able to think creatively and be able to respond to unexpected and last minute changes.
  • Should the teaching artist be unable to teach any of the classes, it is the teaching artist’s responsibility to procure a substitute from the substitute list provided by Single Carrot.
  • The teaching artist is expected to attend planning and/or staff meetings at Single Carrot Theatre and with other SCT teaching artists.
  • Teaching artists report to the Artistic Director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in theatre or education, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in arts education, specifically in theatre or performance.
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint test and criminal background test.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong classroom management skills are a plus.
  • 2+ years teaching experience, all elementary and/or middle school grade levels.
  • 2+ years theatre experience, performance or directing.
  • Experience working on integrating the arts into standard classroom subjects.
  • Experience working within a city school system.

Salary & Benefits Package:

  • $12,000-15,000 (approximately $12.50-15.00 per hour) for a half-time, salaried position, commensurate with experience
  • This is a 10 month position through the 2016/17 school year

Mission:

The Single Carrot Theatre ensemble is a driving force for theatrical innovation in Baltimore—championing new, diverse, and socially significant works; reinvigorating the classics; creating vibrant theatrical experiences; and fiercely supporting the growth of artists.

Brief History:

In 2006, a small ensemble from the University of Colorado conducted a nationwide search and decided to lay down roots and build a theatre in Baltimore. Now, entering its tenth season, Single Carrot theatre has produced 43 mainstage productions, participated in numerous collaborative endeavors with area nonprofits, offered extensive educational programming for both children and adults and engaged in international exchanges with theatre artists from Russia and Bulgaria. Single Carrot Theatre moved to a permanent home in January 2014. Firmly planted in Baltimore, Single Carrot Theatre has made it a priority to be a part of the community and to engage and empower Baltimore’s residents through theatre.

Single Carrot Theatre is an ensemble based theatre company where the ensemble artists of the organization also serve administrative roles. Each ensemble member has voting rights and is actively involved in any big picture decisions and creation of new policy.
