The Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) is hiring! Baltimore's community-powered, collaborative, rock n roll production company is looking for great people who can work part-time to further BROS mission of providing unforgettable experiences to audiences in Baltimore and beyond.

Overview

The Volunteer Director is responsible for creating, implementing and maintaining all systems for BROS volunteering. They should give all BROS volunteers a consistent and high-quality experience that is clearly defined, clearly communicated, organized and transparent. They should be able to operate in a chaotic volunteer production environment and create organizational systems that make our productions approachable for new people. The systems they create for recruiting and interacting with volunteers should ensure that all volunteers have an equal chance to:

  • Participate in the BROS culture and exemplify the BROS values (BROS Values Document)
  • Grow their local community of friends, colleagues, peers and professional network
  • Learn new skills and grow as an artist, technician or administrator
  • Gain a sense of pride in their work and in Baltimore.

The Volunteer Director will help to create an environment where each person is a cultural fit within the organization, is effectively engaged, follows the BROS guidelines and rules as and has a positive experience with BROS in accordance with our values.

They provide consultation to the Executive Director and show-staff on volunteer placement, perks/compensation, training and development. They will actively engage with the company’s events to make sure volunteer roles are filled and that volunteer expectations are well-defined and clearly communicated. In addition they will recruit persons to fill roles based on BROS commitment to equity and diversity.

This person reports to the Executive Director on issues regarding implementation of policies and procedures and the safety of volunteers. The VD is responsible for gathering information for the volunteer newsletter, No Floaters and making sure that all opportunities are adequately communicated to the greater BROS community.

Specific Duties

  • Works with the Marketing Director and Community Engagement Director for recruiting external candidates and new volunteers
  • Works with the Production Director for recruiting candidates for Production Positions
  • Leads internal recruitment for all open volunteer positions/shifts/workshop
  • Manages all aspects of volunteer communication including email lists, No Floaters (BROS weekly volunteer newsletter), BROSbook and BROS Slack environment. Implements new methods as they deem necessary.
  • Manages the comment box and acts as a resource to the board regarding volunteer complaints and concerns to find solutions to any issues and conflicts and to uphold the BROmandments.
  • Works with the show Volunteer Coordinator to orient all volunteers, making sure they are aware of all relevant policies, and maintain a database with contact information and hours tracking for every volunteer involved in production and the BROS organizational work.
  • Works with show-based Volunteer Coordinator or Kitchen Captains to plan and coordinate all activities related to volunteer rewards, hospitality, and compensation. This includes volunteer parties or potlucks, volunteer rewards, and/or any other activities decided on by the VD.
  • Implements policies and procedures, ensuring they are properly accessible to all volunteers.
  • Spreads positive company culture through printed materials, face to face meeting meetings and trainings with the different BROS volunteers and production leaders.
  • Establishes and upholds the Code of Conduct for the organization by carrying out any disciplinary actions or performance-related policies for BROS volunteers. Leads or supports conflict resolution within the volunteer community with a high level of sensitivity and discretion.
  • Note: This position is not the lead on Staff level HR problems and procedures which should be elevated to the BROS Executive Director and Board of Directors.
  • Builds methods for volunteers to give feedback on their experiences within BROS, working with the Executive Staff to incorporate performance-improving feedback.
  • Creates and sustains initiatives for improving the experience of BROS members based on community feedback.
  • Facilitates training opportunities and skills development workshops for BROS volunteers, depending on the needs of the organization, by tapping current creative leaders or outside artists/professionals to teach specific skills.
  • Works with Managing Director to facilitate budgets for various volunteer incentives & operations-related purchases
  • Read and uphold company BROmandments and the BROmanual
  • Attends regular BROS staff meetings and meets with the Executive Director regularly and as requested.
  • Supports the BROS Community Engagement Director in their work to grow and diversify BROS volunteer base with a particular focus on creating meaningful and productive partnerships in underserved parts of Baltimore City and communities of color.
