Founded in 1973 as one of the state councils of the National Endowment for the Humanities, its mission is to inspire all Marylanders to embrace lifelong learning, exchange ideas openly, and enrich their communities. Maryland Humanities offers 14 different programs ranging from Maryland History Day and Chautauqua to One Maryland One Book, Letters About Literature, and Museum on Main Street.

Job Description

The Program Officer reports to the Executive Director, is supported by and supervises the Program Assistant and Outreach staff, and works in close collaboration with other staff, the Program & Communications Committee of the Board, and volunteers.

The Program Officer is responsible for producing, executing, and managing an innovative and engaging menu of public humanities programs that advance the mission of Maryland Humanities and the goals of its Strategic Plan. These include Chautauqua, Maryland History Day, and the Veterans Oral History Project.

The Program Officer oversees and manages the work of the Maryland History Day Outreach staff, including their work on online/digital projects and instruction and teacher institutes and statewide or nationwide assessment of program impact. The Program Officer also oversees and manages the work of the Program Assistant, including ensuring the coordination of the Veterans Oral History Project and Chautauqua.

Skills Required

  • A minimum of four years of demonstrated experience in the development, management, implementation, evaluation, and promotion of engaging humanities programs
  • Experience with large-scale event management preferred
  • Enthusiasm for lifelong learning and the public humanities and their value in contemporary life
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically
  • Ability to cultivate positive and productive relationships and partnerships with a wide range of cultures, people, and organizations

Education Required

BA degree in the humanities (advanced degree preferred)

Travel Required

This position requires occasional travel within the state of Maryland.

Compensation

Position is full-time at 35 hours per week with a competitive salary commensurate with experience and credentials (range: $56,000–$60,000).
