The Baltimore Office of Promotion and The Arts (BOPA) is a non-profit arts and events organization charged with making Baltimore a more creative and vibrant city. The organization’s programs include city-wide special events and festivals (Artscape, Baltimore Book Festival, parades, fireworks) as well as management of historic sites and cultural facilities (School 33 Art Center, Top of the World Observation Level, Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, The Cloisters). As the City’s designated arts council, BOPA administers arts education and cultural programs, awards grants, and coordinates the 1% Public Art Program.
General
The Community Arts Specialist is a full-time regular, exempt position reporting to the Director of Cultural Affairs. The position is a member of the Public Art Program team, responsible for coordinating public art projects in the City of Baltimore.
Responsibilities
Oversee the Baltimore Mural Program, including developing new projects, managing the development and content of the website (in progress), supervise restorations & mural collections management.
Oversee Art@Work which is an arts-based workforce development program for teens
Oversee the Neighborhood Lights program in conjunction with Light City
Oversee two public art grant programs; the Transformative Art Prize and Lots Alive, both of which work with neighborhoods and artists to create significant works of public art in communities.
Develop and cultivate community partnerships that enhance BOPA programs and activities.
Work with city agencies, the Public Art Commission (PAC), public art staff, artists, architects and others to coordinate the design, production and installation of public art projects throughout the city to ensure that the city’s public art is of the highest quality.
Attend PAC meetings to report on current and upcoming projects in portfolio to keep the PAC informed on the status of projects.
Work with the CA team to develop and execute the visual arts components of festivals produced by BOPA, including Artscape, Baltimore Book Festival, Light City, etc.
Perform various functions as assigned to support other events and projects produced by BOPA.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate is a dynamic, people-oriented individual with outstanding organizational skills and experience coordinating public art projects. Additional required skills:
Bachelor’s degree in an arts discipline
3 years professional experience in the arts.
Project management experience
Experience with public art projects
Excellent writing and speaking skills
Demonstrated problem solving abilities
Ability to establish priorities and work effectively with various constituencies
Familiarity with local artists and arts organizations
Proficiency in Microsoft computer programs (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
