The H. Furlong Baldwin Library at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) is offering a 15-week, paid oral history internship. The internship can be completed either remotely or in a hybrid format. The intern will gain a thorough understanding of the oral history life cycle, along with experience using the archival management system ArchivesSpace and digital asset management system (DAMS) ResourceSpace. The MCHC is a recent beneficiary of the Recordings at Risk grant, through which over 300 oral history tapes are being digitized and preserved. The intern will help to increase accessibility to these and other oral history materials by creating metadata and finding aids to describe collections. This is a great opportunity for a student or recent graduate to gain experience in the oral history field. The intern will work directly with the Library Director and Special Collections Archivist.

The Oral History Intern will:

• Arrange incoming files recently digitized under the Recordings at Risk grant
• Create and/or update records in the DAMS for digitized audio and transcripts
• Create and/or update finding aids in ArchivesSpace for newly digitized collections
• Use existing records and other resources to research rights issues, the history of legacy collections, and provide context about creators
• Use analytical and writing skills to craft abstracts, scope and content notes, and historical/biographical notes
• Parse out existing and newly created metadata according to organizational standards
• Utilize controlled vocabularies, including Library of Congress name authority files and subject headings

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled as an undergraduate, pursuing a graduate degree in information studies, history, or a related program, or a recent graduate from such a program.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
• Close attention to detail
• Proficient with technology and able to learn new systems and software
• Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision
• Must be able to commit 10-12 hours per week
• Selected interns will undergo a background check

Benefits:

• $1,500 stipend for 15 weeks (150 hours) of work
