General purpose: The Assistant Director for Entrepreneurship infuses entrepreneurship and business skills as integral elements of education at MICA through programming, training, internal and external partnership building and resources development. A major vehicle that this position oversees is the annual UP/Start Venture Competition that includes the Pop Up & Pitch Day. The position has a formal nickname of Entrepreneurship Evangelist, which can be used on a business card.
Summary of Essential Functions:
• Serve as the primary campus resource for UP/Start in terms of information, recruitment, refinement, and implementation
• Steward interested students through the research, development and readiness of their full UP/Start proposals
• Work collaboratively with campus leaders to develop a vision for MICA’s co-curricular entrepreneurship programming and how that complements curricular offerings
• Advise students and alumni in career counseling appointments related to entrepreneurship and business
• Maintain a student-centered and service-oriented approach
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
• Serve as the primary campus resource and organizer of UP/Start – generate interest, build resources, identify mentor and judges, design and implement workshops, and develop and manage all critical processes from application to competition
• Coordinate dissemination of key UP/Start deadlines to the campus community including information program sessions for students (conducted in-person and virtually)
• Provide expert coaching on proposals, collecting progress reports from all applicants
• Coordinate mandatory meetings with eligible UP/Start candidates, and meet regularly with students to ensure all content requirements are met
• Work with entrepreneurs in the Baltimore community to determine the strengths and challenges of MICA candidates, providing feedback to enhance student outcomes
• Organize and convene the review panel of appropriate regional business investors and experts; coordinate individual pitches with each candidate
• Serve the MICA community by advising current students and alumni in career counseling appointments related to entrepreneurship and business
• Develop resources for students and alumni to connect to local and national business support structures
• Coordinate, develop and lead workshops educating the MICA community on entrepreneurship including the Business Matters Boot Camp, Taxes for Artists, Financial Literacy, etc.
• Develop in-class workshops to expand the Career Development “Take-Out Menu” offerings to faculty around entrepreneurial topics
• In conjunction with the Director for Career Development, assist the Provost and Associate Deans in the development of business based curriculum
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Background in business development including necessary resources for business planning
• Background in program administration and event management
• Basic knowledge of art and design fields
• Experience generating and giving presentations and pitches
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a broad range of constituents
• Excellent oral and written communication and organization/planning skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative work style with a high level of maturity, professionalism, and diplomacy
• Ability to communicate effectively with others, promote teamwork, problem solve and be a dynamic thinker
• Proficiency with Windows and/or MAC operating systems, including Microsoft Office
Minimum qualifications:
• Education: Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in business or related field
• Experience: 3-5 years of relevant experience including business generation, project management, event planning
Preferred Qualifications:
• Education: Master’s Degree, preferably in business or related field
• Previous experience with small business advisement
• Experience working with college students or in an educational setting
• Proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite
