Making Homes for the Arts in Sacred Places
Partners for Sacred Places is a national nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and sound stewardship of the country’s older historic, religious properties. What a better way to preserve such beautiful and inspirational facilities than to create art within their walls? Partners’ Making Homes for the Arts in Sacred Places (AiSP) program, with funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, is conducting a study in Baltimore, Maryland to investigate:
- Current spaces in use for performance, rehearsal, and office
- The state of those conditions as well as cost to the artist
- Hopes for future arts friendly spaces
- Current sacred places within the city of Baltimore who are interested in sharing their space with artist and cataloging the physical spaces they have
3 City Arts Study
The Three City Arts Study builds upon Partners’ successful Making Homes for the Arts in Sacred Places (AiSP) program. AiSP was designed to facilitate long-term, mutually beneficial space-sharing relationships between arts organizations - with inadequate or no home - and houses of worship with space to share. AiSP maintains a database of information on arts organizations and sacred places; provides tools such as training, documentation, and budget and legal assistance; and acts as a matchmaker and facilitator for partnerships.
Three regions were identified for this study: Baltimore, MD; Austin, TX; and Detroit, MI. These cities are very diverse and represent a range of circumstances for the arts organizations in each area, which will ensure the development.
