The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents Anastasia Samoylova: FloodZone, on display from January 29 through May 24.

In 2016, the artist Anastasia Samoylova moved to Miami, Florida. As she familiarized herself with the city through photography, a larger story began to unfold. The resulting body of work, FloodZone, explores what it looks like to live in the southern United States at a time when rising sea levels and hurricanes threaten the most prized locations with storm surges and coastal erosion.

Unfolding: Dualities features the artwork of John Chang and Jeffrey Repko. By invoking calligraphic forms, Chang’s paintings comment on the distortion of language and reclaim the energy of the written word. Repko’s sculptures investigate the idea of function through a dialogue between traditional techniques and contemporary technologies. The Howard County Arts Council's annual Resident Visual Artists Exhibit showcases recent artwork by artists with studios at the Center for the Arts: Phill Branch, Kassamira Carter-Howard (Emerging Resident Studio Artist), Sara Engel, Sherry Jankiewicz, Myungsook Ryu Kim, Diana Marta, Lisa Scarbath, Jereme Scott, Asma Ahmed Shikoh, Andrei Trach, Jamie Travers, Mary Jo Tydlacka, and David Zuccarini. Teen Club is CAC’s after-school program for Brooklyn Park Middle School students. The club provides a diverse range of art activities such as painting, drawing, sculpture, woodworking, ceramics, and more. Over the semester, students work on designing and curating this art exhibition showcasing their creations.

This exhibition will showcase Anne Arundel Public School art teachers and the way they collaborate with their children, grandchildren, foster children, step children, nieces and nephews, parents, animals, etc. to create meaningful works of art.

Artists grow together - feeding off the positive energy created through community, collaboration, and shared spirit. In a time where we are all separated by compartmentalized priorities, prepackaged options, and virtual meetings, it is crucial for artists to strive for a real connection to their art practice, their artistic peers, and their art goals. The Maryland Artists Anonymous (MDAA) aims to maintain open and healthy artistic connections. These connections are formed between members, between the artwork and viewers, and between career and the passion to create.

"TRANSMISSION" will be on view at School 33 Art Center from June 6–July 21, 2024, featuring the 11 artists who were awarded the Municipal Art Society of Baltimore Artist Travel Prize from 2017–2023: Nate Larson, Erin Fostel, Erick Antonio Benitez, LaToya Hobbs, Joe Giordano, Hoesy Corona, Schroeder Cherry, Rosa Leff, Jackie Milad, Elena Volkova, & Jill Orlov.

The Magic of Science Fair and Family Festival 2024 will include a "carnival of science," which begins at 11 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. A regional science fair for middle school students will begin at 8 a.m. and culminate with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. Submissions for the science fair must be received by May 6, 2024. The event will feature a day of interactive activities and exploration and offer activities for learners of all ages, from infants to adults.

Paint It! Ellicott City 2024 showcases artwork created by juried artists during our annual plein air paint-out in Ellicott City’s historic district. The juror for this year’s exhibit is Abigail McBride, who will offer remarks and present juror awards at the reception on June 10 from 6-8pm.

In Boundless, Christine Lee Tyler and Sookkyung Park explore themes of mortality and human emotion. Tyler layers various media and patterns to create complex compositions evocative of nature while Park’s intricate paper sculptures are a nod to her Korean culture and background. This exhibition pairs Henri Matisse’s compositions with those of 19th-century Japanese woodcut artists to explore the global appeal of color and pattern across space and time. The Art of Pattern: Henri Matisse and Japanese Woodcut Artists features several paintings and prints by Matisse from the 1920s, with posed models and heavily patterned interior backgrounds, reflecting the artist’s interest in layering his works from this period with decorative items from around the world.

This presentation speaks to Native people’s dynamic and powerful relationship with land, home, and sanctuary. While they have beliefs and practices as wide and vast as this continent, Native communities share a recognition that humans exist as part of a larger ecosystem that must stay in balance. As the pressures of colonization and contemporary life have assaulted traditional lifeways, the works in this exhibition demonstrate the resilience and versatility with which Native artists maintain their cultures, community connections, and sense of home.

Dyani White Hawk (Sičáŋǧu Lakota) presents one new and two existing sculptural works from her Carry series. Each Carry piece, composed of a large copper bucket and ladle adorned with glass beads, bears extravagantly long fringe whose draping emulates arboreal root structures. Alongside the artist’s works, White Hawk selected historic Lakota belongings from the BMA’s collection. Through these works, White Hawk insists upon an interdependence between art and function—and by extension art and life—effectively calling into question art history’s tendency to devalue craft.
