From East, Like the Sun asks how we can break the cycle of economic and social forces that compel immigrants and the children of immigrants to leave their homes and families in search of security.

The play follows two generations in two families (and one 19th century ghost) searching for the motherlode - whether it’s gold, hidden treasure, or stable housing in the impossible market of Marin County, California

Join the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra for the exhilarating launch of Season 63! We’re kicking things off with a burst of energy from award-winning composer Tania León. Her piece, Pasajes, is a dazzling work that weaves together the rhythmic intensity of Latin American melodies, the sultry pulse of Caribbean beats, and the exuberant spirit of carnaval.

One of the most in-demand comedians working today, Brad has appeared on “The Tonight Show,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” and in the films “Little Evil,” “Mascots,” and “Reno 911: It’s A Wonderful Heist.”

His first one-hour special, “Fun Size,” was the highest-rated special on Showtime. His second, “Daddy Issues,” prompted The New York Times to write “No one is doing stand-up comedy more hilariously than Brad Williams.”

His other special on Netflix “The Degenerates,” garnered huge ratings and rave reviews.

Performance Information

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble, known for their "splendid playing, impeccable sound, and balance" (Gramophone), will make their much-anticipated debut at Chamber Music Maryland. For their CMM program, they will present contrasting string works written by two composers whose lives were profoundly shaped by the wars and terror of the 20th century, Dmitri Shostakovich and Erwin Schulhoff. The concert will also feature Felix Mendelssohn's Octet for Strings, a masterpiece composed at the precocious age of 16.

Marko Topchii was born in Kyiv, Ukraine, to a musical family. He started to play the guitar when he was four. He graduated from the Kharkiv Conservatory and went on to continue with a three-year postgraduate program at the Kyiv Tchaikovsky Music Academy with Yuri Aleksik. In 2018 he joined the professional studies program at the San Francisco Conservatory in the class of Judicaёl Perroy. Marko has won top prizes in more than 100 awards worldwide, among them 2nd prize in the Baltimore International Guitar Competition and 1st prize in the Guitar Foundation of America Competition.

UMBC's Department of Music presents The Anansi Trio, a group of like-minded musicians drawing from a wide range of global traditions. With Mark Merella on the hybrid drum kit, Larry Melton on bass, and UMBC’s Matt Belzer on saxophones, they create music that is unique and experimental yet remains accessible.

We open our season in grand style with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, known as the “Eroica.” This piece represents a turning point in the composer’s career and in the history of classical music- a shift from the Classical to Romantic style. The piece is followed by Guilmant’s Symphony No. 1 or Organ Sonata No. 1. It is a notable example of the French Romantic organ tradition, blending orchestral textures with virtuosic organ passages.
