Occasional Symphony gives its flagship Halloween show featuring the 1926 Japanese silent horror film A Page of Madness directed by Teinosuke Kinugasa. Occasional Symphony along with Kerry Holahan, soprano, will provide a live soundtrack to the silent film featuring classical favorites and world premieres of compositions by Nicholas Bentz, Joshua Bornfield, Douglas Buchanan, Haley Olsen, and Alexa Rinn. Come in costume!

Adam Gopnik, author, broadcaster and award-winning writer for The New Yorker, will address "Believing Without Belief, Spirituality Without Team Spirit: Thinking about Tolerance in the Twenty-First Century."
Free and open to the region’s academic and religious communities and the general public, this lecture will provide a lively forum for discussing the nature and limits of religious tolerance and belief. It will be followed by a kosher reception. Registration is required.
The last proprietary governor of Maryland, Sir Robert Eden (1741-1784) furnished his Annapolis mansion with expense and care in the hopes of making it the political and social center of the colony. The result was later described as “the best house in Annapolis,” but at the cost of considerable financial debt to the governor. Separated as a result of the American Revolutionary War, this presentation will examine the relationship of Robert Eden to his possessions and make a case for the place of objects in the historian’s understanding of the Loyalist experience.
Gene Bertoncini is one of the pre-eminent jazz guitarists’ active today. His fluid technique and lyricism have won him international praise and accolades as the "Segovia of jazz." An eloquent and versatile improviser, Mr. Bertoncini has been heard with an extraordinary range of jazz greats, including performances and recordings with Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Wayne Shorter, Hubert Laws, Paul Desmond among others, as well as such distinguished singers as Tony Bennett, Lena Horne, Nancy Wilson, Vic Damone, and Eydie Gorme.

Join Curator Ellen Hoobler as she discusses the transformations—both physical and spiritual—that were central to early American societies are how they were represented in their works of art. Conservator Angela Elliot will provide insights regarding the discoveries that were made through technical analysis of these works in the museum’s laboratories.

Ann Bracken is an activist with a pen. The Altar of Innocence and No Barking in the Hallways: Poems from the Classroom. Ann currently serves as a contributing editor for Little Patuxent Review and runs poetry and writing workshops in libraries, community centers, and prisons.

The annual Phi Beta Kappa lecture features Edward Larson, Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and the Hugh and Hazel Darling Chair in Law at Pepperdine University. He speaks on “The Scopes Trial in History and Legend,” one of the most famous trials in American history due to the fictional movie “Inherit the Wind.” However, he argues that most people who think they know about this trial do not accurately understand what happened in Dayton, Tenn., or appreciate its ongoing significance. A biennial juried exhibit, Art Maryland 2018 is a premier showcase for regional artists. This year’s guest juror is Cara Ober, a Baltimore-based artist, writer, and founding editor of BMoreArt, Baltimore’s online art magazine and print journal. Ober will offer remarks and present juror awards at the reception on November 9 from 6-8pm.
