Happenstance Theatre’s award-winning company presents a suite of comic material old and new. Noted for their physical comedy and precise ensemble work, the company recasts free-standing material from their repertoire along with new works informed by great comedy of the past: 19th Century European Circus entrées, Vaudeville, silent film, and early television. A playful new format will structure the material and enhance the audience experience.

Is it better to live at war or die at peace? In Dead and Breathing, cantankerous Caroline Whitlock has been dying for two years already—and she’s sick of it. If her mouthy new hospice nurse kills her, maybe each can get what she wants! Together, two women are forced to confront life’s (and death's) most difficult questions in this fast-paced, heart-tugging comedy.
HEAVYWEIGHTPAINT is a feature length documentary film about four figurative painters: Jerome Lagarrigue, Joseph Adolphe, Tim Okamura, and Taha Clayton. They are at different points in their careers, but share the struggle to survive the difficult, often grueling, challenges of the art world. Each artist faces unique obstacles, but the painters' uncommon friendship provides the moral support to spur them onward.

Twenty-three years ago, Naoko Maeshiba and Rohaizad Suaidi met in Honolulu via Japan and Singapore. They reunited in the nation’s capital, at the beginning of the millennium. In 2017, they find each other in Baltimore revisiting their experiences living in and outside of the US.
Ghosts of Saturday Night is a one-man show inspired by the poetry of Tom Waits - songs and lyrics have been re-imagined, expanded and adapted into monologues, stories and scenes. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll have a drink.

Celebrate the Jewish composers of Broadway with song! From George and Ira Gershwin to Stephen Sondheim these composers have had a huge impact on Broadway in particular and American music in general. Sarah Baumgarten will be both performing some of our favorite pieces and giving us a little insight into their history.
Prerequisite: Acting 1. This six week course takes the individual experience of creating a character and illuminates the process of partnering onstage. Students are introduced to different styles of text and approaches to performance. Strengthen the ability to listen and respond authentically, connect to impulse and pursue necessary objectives resulting in interesting conflict and theatrical performance. This class culminates in a scene showcase and feedback session, and is a requirement to take Acting 3. *REGISTRATION COMING SOON*

Actors Tool Box I: Provides an introduction to acting and theatre, focusing on the basic skills and concepts needed to develop fully develop characters, and telling the story of a play. Students work in the areas of Improv acting, movement & physical acting, and voice projection. Students use Creative Drama to devise their own work, which they present to a live audience as their final performance.
When words fail, a home-cooked meal transcends differences in this touching story of intergenerational connectedness, forgiveness and the sweetest spice of life: love. As a Korean family struggles to relate across emotional and cultural divides, it’s the ingredients they share in common that lead to understanding. A perceptive and lyrical exploration of the act of cooking as a form of expression, Aubergine is a mouthwatering meditation on the beauty of life where hope is no mere ingredient—it’s the main course.

Annex Theater is holding auditions for LIFE OR THEATRE? the next show of its 2018 season. LIFE OR THEATRE? is a new work written and directed by Carly J. Bales (Director: Stupid Ghost; Cleveland; Recent: The Tempest), adapted from the work and life of artist Charlotte Salomon.
Scripts and sides will be provided via email and at the audition. Bringing a short monologue and song is preferred but not required!
