Life as we know it is in danger. It threatens to destroy all that we love and to unravel the very fabric of our universe! Its name? The Unstoppable Shadow. There is only one man could possibly contend with such an obliterating force. His name? Derek.
But the Unstoppable Shadow has already taken over the body of the President and brainwashed Derek’s friends! The only way Derek can stop Shadow is to free his darker half, team up with a being from another dimension, and transcend far past the known limits of his powers. But can they defeat The Unstoppable Shadow?
Dark World’s Destruction 2 is a fast paced, visually stimulating, spectacle theatre piece written by Derek Carr. In the play, Carr is both the writer and a fictional stand-in for himself in the play. Blending his experiences growing up in South Baltimore within tropes of fantasy and anime, Carr creates a unique piece of science fiction where abstract combat clashes with the inner dimensions of Derek’s mind. Derek is the hero of the light world, charged with protecting our utopia at any cost but dark forces seek to control and obliterate his friends and family in an attempt to turn Derek toward destruction and death.
This play is a sequel to Dark World’s Destruction, a play Annex Theater produced in 2010 when Carr was only 14! While the first Dark World’s Destruction dealt with planet hopping and the rediscovery of family, the sequel confronts the anxieties of losing family and friends. Annex is excited to kick off its 2018 season with this new work by a truly unique theatrical voice in Baltimore.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Evan Moritz is the Founding Artistic Director of Annex Theater where he has directed over twenty plays since 2008. With a particular love for bringing science fiction and classical pieces to new light on the stage, he has directed works such as Flatland, The Tempest, Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy, The Left Hand of Darkness, Ubik, and The Magic Flute. Moritz is delighted to be working with the playwright again. Derek Carr’s unique approach to science fiction and fantasy has intrigued Moritz since 2009, when they first met in an after-school program.

Dark World’s Destruction 2 sees the return of Annex Theater house favorites such as: Costumer Susan MacCorkle whose stunning recent work includes Flatland(2016) and The Tempest (2017); Videographer and filmmaker Rachel Dwiggins (1-800-MICE, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman); and sound designer David Crandall (Stupid Ghost, Music Director: The Magic Flute, The Master and Margarita)
