Recent Tendencies in Contemporary Art: The Materials of Contemporary Art: Familiar Forms and Innovative Media

Kerr Houston, professor of art history, theory and criticism, Maryland Institute College of Art

From Maurizio Cattelan’s infamous banana (taped to a wall and priced at $120,000) to the recently hot market for NFTs, materials have been at the center of recent conversations about contemporary art. In this lecture, the second in a three-part series, we will consider a range of media used in recent works. In some works, such as the photographs of Deana Lawson, relatively traditional media are alive and well; in others, such as the collage paintings of Tschabalala Self, conventional materials are used in novel ways. But evolving digital platforms and the prevalence of screen-based imagery during the recent pandemic have also suggested entirely new possibilities, leading to a remarkable degree of experimentation with materials.
