Sookkyung Park’s immersive installation of large-scale sculptures and smaller works includes a merging and expansion of her two seminal pieces, “Blooming” and “Rise Up,” to simultaneously underscore the interconnectedness of life and bring people together. This airy and colorful dreamscape—saturated with symbols of hope, strength and harmony—inspires awe and optimism.

The use of light has been a creative power wielded by artists for centuries. Through a contemporary lens artists Neville Barbour and Joe Gerlak utilize their skills in various mediums to delight the audience with their artistic vision. Barbour draws on ambient light within his charcoal and graphite drawings on a painted surface. His work explores hyperrealities that often leave audiences viewing the work as photographic. Gerlak explores plexiglass as a medium and a muted color palette to manipulate visible and perceived light.

Lost Boys: Amos Badertscher’s Baltimore is the first career retrospective of artist Amos Badertscher in the United States. Between the 1960s and 2005, Badertscher documented hustlers, club kids, go-go dancers, drag queens, drug addicts, friends, and lovers who were part of LGBTQ+ life in Baltimore. A self-taught photographer, Badertscher (American, born 1936) worked on the fringes of the polite society into which he was born as an upper-middle class white Baltimorean.

UMBC's Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture presents States of Becoming, an exhibition curated by Fitsum Shebeshe and produced by Independent Curators International (ICI), on view at the CADVC from September 22 through December 9.

Tiona Nekkia McClodden’s genre-defying work, Play Me Home (2021), is a four-channel video with sound and sculptural objects (two horns, a leather-bound script, and seeds) blending narrative fiction and nonfiction. This installation reflects the Philadelphia-based artist’s three-year journey of delving into her family history and funerary traditions in the South.

Following an open call to artists based in Maryland and neighboring states, Nekisha Durrett of Washington, D.C. and Jackie Milad of Baltimore were selected by a jury to create new works in dialogue with Fred Wilson’s Artemis/Bast (1992). The sculpture joins the body of Artemis, Greek goddess of the hunt, and the head of Bast (also known as Bastet), the more ancient Egyptian cat goddess. The black feline head sits atop the white plaster body, asserting Africa as a vital source of knowledge across the ancient world.

Step into a transformative journey with WATCH YOUR STEP, an exhibition and community programming of events featuring the vibrant works of twin artists Hope & Faith McCorkle. Transcending the boundaries of time, the duo guides us through a profound exploration of the intricate relationship between past and present. This immersive experience is an ode to the conscious decisions we make, paying homage to the lineage of ancestors who have paved the way.

Spark 6: Refractions features the work of UMBC and Towson University faculty, recent graduates, and current students in the historic galleries of The Peale in Baltimore City. The exhibition opens on October 26 and continues through November 26.

This month, we're reading "Blizzard," a story about the infamous blizzard of 1978 which brought 53 inches of snow to the author's childhood home in Rhode Island. After the story, children will be invited to make Watercolor and Salt Snowy Paintings!

Channing’s colorful prints and paintings were inspired by her experiments with chine collé, a special printmaking technique in which paper of a different color or texture is adhered to the overall piece.

Zekes’ Coffee Shop and Maryland Art Place (MAP) are pleased to present Generation: Crit II, an exhibition featuring artworks from a local Maryland Art Crit Group, The Salonistas: Loose Threads. The Salonistas is a tapestry of friends with individual art practices whose unifying thread is to connect with one another and gain inspiration and insight into their work through feedback. This group includes accomplished artists who have won grants and awards and exhibited both nationally and internationally.
