In 1177 B.C., after centuries of cultural and technological evolution, the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt, resulting in the world’s first recorded Dark Ages. In this lecture, based on his award-winning book of the same title, Eric H. Cline of the George Washington University explores why the Bronze Age ended and whether the collapse of those ancient civilizations might hold some warnings for our current society. A reception will follow the talk. This program is generously supported by the Boshell Foundation.
The Department of Music presents UMBC Jazz in Concert under the direction of Matthew Belzer. Featuring all of the UMBC jazz groups, large and small and spotlighting student compositions.

Children's Chorus of Maryland celebrates its 43rd annual holiday concert Voices of Peace on December 2nd, 2018 at the Gordon Center for the Performing Arts. With the guiding theme Voices of Peace, the three choirs will present selections that emphasize the need and yearning for peace, recognizing the gentle presence of peace in the world and between people. Continuing its more than quarter-century tradition of bringing award-winning jazz musicians to the city for intimate, memorable performances, the Baltimore Chamber Jazz Society launches its 2018-2019 season with a concert by renowned pianist Kenny Barron and his Quintet on Sunday, December 2, 2018.
Howard County General Hospital Symphony of Lights, a drive-through spectacle of more than 100 larger-than-life holiday light displays, will be held in Merriweather Park at Symphony Woods this November. Presented by M&T Bank, Symphony of Lights benefits Howard County General Hospital.
Classic jazz for the contemporary audience” is the mantra for the Kash Wright Trio, one of the best-kept secrets of the DMV’s jazz community. Led by pianist, arranger and composer Prakash Wright, the trio is best known for modern arrangements of jazz standards and jazz arrangements of hymns and pop tunes. This December, the trio brings its brand of Christmas cheer to the Cabaret at Germano’s as they feature music from their Christmas CD, In The City of David.
The McDaniel College Choirpresents “Songs of Peace.” In addition to music from diverse locales and historical eras, several familiar carols will be performed. Audience participation is encouraged.
The choir is under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, director of choral activities at McDaniel, with David Kreider, director of keyboard studies at McDaniel College and founder and artistic director of Chamber Music on the Hill, serving as accompanist. The Madrigal Singers, McDaniel’s premier a cappella vocal ensemble, also perform on several selections.
The Columbia Pro Cantare chorus will perform George Frideric Handel's masterpiece, Messiah, Sunday, December 2, 2018, 7:30 pm in the Jim Rouse Theatre for the Performing Arts, Columbia, MD. A pre-concert lecture will take place at 6:30 pm.
For many people, attending a performance of Messiah is an essential activity of the holiday season. Columbia Pro Cantare has thrilled audience's with its annual performance of the oratorio since 1986.
The Department of Music presents the Camerata Chamber Choir under the direction of Stephen Caracciolo. A select choir of 40–50 singers drawn from all majors of the university, Camerata performs a wide variety of works drawn from the expansive choral repertoire, including Renaissance motets, folksongs, choral-orchestral works, German part songs, Russian sacred liturgies, American spirituals, and new works.

The Songster Series ends the year with longtime Baltimore folk troubadour Caleb Stine. Influenced by everyone from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley, Stine’s songwriting cuts through with plain-spoken meditations using rooted language and music. Grab a drink and join the conversation illuminating Stine’s musical story and vast range of influences.
