Turning Tides: Action, Resilience, and the Mental Landscapes of Black and Brown Voices," at Gallery B in Bethesda, Maryland

In the spirit of Mental Health Awareness 2025's call to "Turn Awareness into Action," this exhibition, "Turning Tides," illuminates the lived experiences of Black and Brown artists as they navigate the complex landscape of mental well-being. We move beyond passive observation and delve into the active, transformative power of art as a catalyst for healing, advocacy, and community building.

EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS features the work of 25 artists of the APIMEDA diaspora who live and create in the Baltimore and the DMV area. The exhibition title is a sardonic nod to what the phrase “exceeds expectations” triggers across the APIMEDA community while also showcasing works that transgress inherent preconceptions of artworks expected to be seen at an AAPI exhibition during AAPI heritage month.

Witness the powerful photography of Baltimore-based artist Devin Allen, whose black-and-white images capture the raw emotion of the Baltimore uprisings that followed Freddie Gray’s death a decade ago in 2015. Documenting a defining moment in Baltimore’s history, Allen reveals both the pain and strength of its people. See these images—rarely on display—in remembrance of Gray’s life.

The Baltimore Museum of Art is open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays.
