This film explores the history of American jazz in Baltimore as well as the current state of Baltimore’s jazz scene. Visitors will view footage of jazz greats Eubie Blake, Chick Webb, Billie Holiday, Ethel Ennis and more. The film challenges the idea that “Baltimore’s jazz scene died along with the Royal Theatre and Pennsylvania Ave.” Instead, the film demonstrates that the city is still producing amazing culture and jazz with musicians like Gary Bartz, Cyrus Chestnut, Dontae Winslow, Lafayette Gilchrist and Warren Wolf Jr.
Guitarist Michael Joseph Harris, bassist John Previti and drummer Chuck Karner perform a wide variety of instrumental music from Duke Ellington to Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Cole Porter, Django Reinhardt, Danny Gatton, and Stevie Wonder.
In the Renaissance, the lute was known as the “Prince of Instruments,” valued for its expressiveness. Dynamics and tone color were literally at the fingertips, and the variety of sounds produced on the lute were colorful and bold. In this concert you’ll hear GRAMMY-nominated lutenist Ronn McFarlane perform a combination of Renaissance and Baroque music, his own arrangements of Scottish and Irish tunes from the 17th and 18th centuries, and his own eclectic, Celtic- and Americana-inspired, original lute music.
A native of Italy, Peppino D'Agostino emerged on the musical scene in the late 1980's and helped redefine the boundaries of the acoustic guitar. His virtuosic technique, penchant for open tunings, and percussive effects are the basis of his unique compositional style which has been inspiring musicians and audiences alike for years. Add to that his natural warmth, playfulness, and broad musical tastes and you have the recipe for what he calls “minestrone music”.
