Good Grief! is an up-close-and-(hyper)personal mobilization of the joy, companionship, pleasure, rage, and vulnerability of grief. Tapping into performance as a space of elegiac and erotic ritual--fertile for what some call the 6th stage of grief, meaning-making, Good Grief! is a deeply heartfelt dance-clown-theater-burlesque that lays bare how pain is so close to pleasure, loss so close to love, and grief an absurd mixed up process of clinging tight & letting go.
One of the Top Touring Artists of the Pollstar Era, Jeff Dunham, has consistently delivered laughs and shattered ratings with his broadcast specials, global tours, and a best-selling autobiography. His successes have been commemorated with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as well as the Guinness Book of World Records for "Most tickets sold for a stand-up comedy tour," cementing the ventriloquist as a comedy icon.
Tchaikovsky wrestles with eternal themes of love and fate in his Shakespearean tone painting. All the romance and grandeur that Rachmaninoff piled into his glorious Third Piano Concerto emerge with stunning clarity and authenticity in a performance by Olga Kern, the Russian pianist with family ties to Rachmaninoff and the winner at 17 of the prestigious Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition.
The colorful, varied creative voice of composer-pianist and UMBC faculty member Daniel Pesca is explored in this program of solo and chamber works. The event features the world premiere of Pesca’s Feldman Sonnets, a song cycle setting texts by acclaimed poet Irving Feldman.
Camille Saint-Saëns and Giovanni Gabrieli, two dynamic composers, are separated in time by over two hundred years. Both straddled two distinct musical eras that marked both of their prodigious outpourings. Saint-Saëns, a child music prodigy, was a great admirer of the modern music of his day. His orchestral works pay much homage to the giants that came before him including Bach, Handel, Haydn, and Mozart. He composed his Symphony No. 3—a majestic showstopper, popularly known as the “Organ Symphony”—in 1886 at the artistic peak of his career. It would be his last symphony.

Christopher Durang’s comedic 30 min. one-act play, directed by senior theatre arts major Shakara Sapp of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, revolves around Jim and Marsha, who have been married for 13 years and are feeling a little bored and unhappy.
Note: the show contains adult material and is intended for mature audiences
You can always count on the superstar violinist Joshua Bell to perform Mendelssohn’s deeply poetic concerto with “huge tenderness, rendering the audience to jelly” (Bachtrack). The young Russian conductor Anna Rakitina navigates the mysteries and charms of Elgar’s titillating Enigma Variations, and she introduces one of the most compelling voices in contemporary music: the Pulitzer prize-winning composer and sound artist Ellen Reid, who weaves the intimate tones of three wordless sopranos into a score that reflects on women’s suffrage.
