Alfred Yun Trio: The Magic of Monk
The Magic of Monk
Alfred Yun is a Korean-American jazz pianist and composer whose music reflects influences ranging from jazz, hip hop, and K-Pop to traditional Korean music.
In 2019, his music was widely heard in Seoul, South Korea when he composed a score for Kookmin University. A related video was featured on national television and in movie theaters,
subways and airports.
In the U.S. the pianist was honored to be selected by the Music Center at Strathmore as an Artist-in-Residence for the 2023-2024 season. The AIR program nurtures emerging artists, introducing them to a wider public in concerts and other events.
Yun has performed at such festivals such as the Lake Anne Jazz Festival, KORUS Festival,
Jazz in the Country, Crossroads Festival and Nowon Festival in Seoul, South Korea.
He’ll make his Annapolis debut at the Annapolis Jazz & Roots Festival on November 3 with bassist David Jernigan and drummer Paul Jung sharing the stage. Titled “The Magic of Monk” their program features music of legendary jazz pianist Thelonious Monk along with original pieces by Alfred Yun.
Says Yun, “Thelonious Monk is my favorite pianist and I’ve been playing his music for many years. Monk is unique in so many ways: his music is quirky, funny, dissonant, rhythmic, pretty and beautiful. It is difficult to find all of these qualities in one song, let alone one artist. Yet, for Monk, it is common to find all of these qualities in one song."
Look forward to hearing pieces such as “Evidence,” which demonstrates Monk’s rhythmic brilliance, “Ugly Beauty,” and “Pannonica,” a lovely piece dedicated to Monk’s friend and patron, Baroness Pannonica.
St. Luke’s Episcopal Church has hosted numerous musical events for decades. The charming location, excellent acoustics and gorgeous grand piano will enhance a memorable performance you won't want to miss.
