CARRY ME HOME: Music of Struggle, Mourning, and Redemption is a musical exploration of the harshness of winter juxtaposed with our constant hope for a brighter future. Embracing contrasts like these has become a hallmark of the work of The New Consort, a project-based, professional vocal ensemble directed by baritone Brian Mummert. Through the music of composers ranging from J. S. Bach and John Sheppard to Steven Stucky and Francis Poulenc, the program serves as a cathartic preparation for the arrival of spring. Free-will offering.
The Spire Series presents solo violinist, Kurt Nikkanen, in an all-Bach program.
Kurt Nikkanen is an international soloist of the highest order. At twelve, he gave his Carnegie Hall debut; he was then invited by Zubin Mehta to perform the Paganini Concerto No. 1 with the New York Philharmonic for a Young People’s concert. His recording of William Walton’s Violin Concerto with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra was chosen as Critic’s Choice for 2010 in Gramophone Magazine. Mr. Nikkanen is the Concertmaster of the New York City Ballet Orchestra.
Hailing from Raleigh, North Carolina, Chatham County Line has a distinctively song-oriented urban bluegrass style. But perhaps the term bluegrass is far too limiting for this barnstorming acoustic ensemble that occupies their own corner of the roots music world by using bluegrass instrumentation combined with poignant, stirring vocals that at once conjure Gram Parsons and Dylan.
