Founded in 2011 by Nicole A. Martinell, Deep Vision Dance Company (DVDC) is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization dedicated to producing innovative choreographic work while creating a home for dancers, collaborating with regional artists, and educating the community in the creative process. DVDC/Martinell’s choreography has been featured at venues, festivals, and universities throughout the Baltimore/DC area as well as up the east coast. Some venues include Baltimore Museum of Art (MD), Dance Place (DC), Green Space (NY), Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (MD), Triskelion Arts (NY), Gala Theatre at Tivoli Square (DC) among many others as well as unique, site-specific locations throughout Baltimore City. Martinell’s choreography questions the complexity of humankind and is characterized by detailed characters, spiraling phrases, and a continuous ebb and flow of space. Collaboration with various artists is at the forefront of every multilayered process. Recent choreographic accolades include a Maryland Baker Artist Award and selection for the 31st Annual Choreographers’ Showcase, DC Capital Fringe Festival, New Release Choreographers Showcase at Dance Place, and Exchange Choreographer Festival in Tulsa, OK.
Highly active in the community, DVDC projects include Go Deep! residency programs, such as Learning Physics through Movement; By/4 Artist professional development series; and numerous educational workshops and mentorship programs for the community. Martinell and Sidney Pink co-founded the AKIMBO Dance & Movement Art Festival in Baltimore’s Station North Arts & Entertainment District. Running for 5 consecutive years, this site-specific festival features over 100 artists performing original, site-based works for 800+ audience members.
