By way of introduction, my name is Ed Gross and I am a Visionary Artist working in Baltimore, Maryland. I call my work “ReNEWable ARTifacts”. For years I would introduce myself as a meteorologist who did art and today I am an artist who did meteorology. I am a very lucky person as I just reached my 75th year. I had a most wonderful career as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. And, in 2000, I was honored to be elected a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society.
On May 1st the 2014 Baker Artist Award recipients were announced on and I am proud to announce that I was selected as one of the three b-grant Prize winners. More specifically, I am the recipient of the Semmes G. Walsh b-grant award.
My path to being a full time artist has been unusual. Long before I was a working artist I was a meteorologist focusing on a wide range of environmental issues throughout my career. I have been working on my art now well over two decades. In 2007, I retired after 50 years of work as a meteorologist. My early works were whimsical assemblages using the vast array of found objects I had been collecting through the years. . In my latest phase I am creating more Functional Art as well as a large series of what I call 3D Metal Collages and RoofTop Views, utilizing patinaed, painted copper, rusted corrugated metal and other items I have around my studio. Being self taught with no formal training, my work has been exhibited at numerous shows and exhibits in the Washington, DC/Baltimore area over the last 20 years.
