Jazz in the Sculpture Garden
The BMA’s popular Jazz in the Sculpture Garden concert series is back! Join fellow jazz enthusiasts for this one-of-a-kind summer event with regional and national talents performing amidst a fantastic collection of modern art in the Museum’s lush Sculpture Garden.
JULY 25 – THE TIM GREEN GROUP Native Baltimorean saxophonist Tim Green reshapes familiar melodies into graceful harmonies that marry gospel and jazz. Among his numerous accomplishments, Green has performed at the Grammys, recorded with Destiny’s Child, and toured with the legendary Herbie Hancock.
AUGUST 1 – THE HENDRIK MEURKENS SAMBA JAZZ QUINTET Hendrik Meurkens has recorded over a dozen albums featuring his distinctive fusion of harmonica and Samba. His trademark harmonica and vibraphone explores the full terrain of Brazilian jazz.
AUGUST 8 – MARCUS JOHNSON PROJECT Influenced by musical greats Quincy Jones and Thelonious Monk, self-taught keyboardist Marcus Johnson is acclaimed for his unique style that combines contemporary jazz with hip hop.
AUGUST 22 – THE DAVE STRYKER “EIGHT TRACK” BAND Dave Stryker is “one of the most distinctive guitarists to come along in recent years,” according to the Village Voice. He leads his own quintet to a perfect blend of inventive melody and rhythmic drive.
AUGUST 29 – THE STEVEN KROON LATIN JAZZ SEXTET Percussionist Steven Kroon has captivated audiences for more than 35 years, recording and performing with musicians Roberta Flack, Aretha Franklin, Diana Krall, The Temptations, and especially the late R&B legend Luther Vandross, who he accompanied for 20 years.
