Few movements have so profoundly shaped the western world as The Reformation, sparked 500 years ago when a Roman Catholic priest named Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Wittenburg Castle Church. Luther’s call for reforms in the church, emphasizing Scripture and the faith of the individual believer, led to tremendous geopolitical upheaval throughout Europe and forever changed the continent’s theological landscape. This fall, Masterworks Chorale offers a musical commemoration of this event featuring music by Luther himself, J.S. Bach, and Michael Praetorius.
Masterworks Chorale presents its winter concert, which celebrates the 500th anniversary of the Reformation with several settings of its unofficial anthem, “A Mighty Fortress,” sung in chapel by McDaniel (former Western Maryland) College students, among featured works. The performance also includes collaborations with regional ensembles, including the McDaniel College Choir, Children’s Chorus of Carroll County, Frostburg State University Choir and Washington Cornett and Sackbutt Ensemble.

The exhibition “Picking Up the Pieces” includes more than 35 works of art by Jim Condron, one of this year’s top Pollock-Krasner award winners. The artist draws on humor and memory, and finds unexpected beauty in juxtaposing everyday objects and cast-off remnants with the traditional medium of paint. Condron’s visual explorations test the limits of color, form, texture, and chance.
