Columbia Pro Cantare opens its 49th season Saturday, October 25, 7:30 PM, with a concert celebrating the musical influence of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor on the occasion of his 150th birthday year. The highly acclaimed British composer, born of a Sierra Leone doctor and an English mother, Coleridge-Taylor set Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s epic poem Hiawatha to music, and brought African music to English symphonic halls in choral and symphonic works. The program includes music by British and American composers including Amy Beach and Dan Forrest.
