Songs & Stories with Maria Broom the Storydancer and Jali D the Drumtalker

Songs & Stories with Maria Broom the Storydancer and Jali D the Drumtalker

We're excited to host Maria Broom for a reading of her new book, The Village Bully. She’ll be accompanied by Jali D the Drumtalker as she tells the story of young Michael Jose Jamal and how he and his classmates learn from their teacher to create a ‘circle of love’ to help stop bullying. Based on the traditions of the Babemba tribe of Africa, The Village Bully teaches about a culture’s loving and healing ways. Miss Maria and Jali D will also be performing other songs and stories.

Copies of the book, beautifully illustrated by John Malloy and including a CD, will be available for a special price of $10. Book signing and refreshments follow each reading. Readings are on Saturday, February 7 at 12:00 & 1:30 pm in the France-Merrick Library.

Known for her recurring roles in HBO's The Wire and The Corner, Broom is also a storyteller and dancer with more than 40 years of experience performing and teaching worldwide. She's also a part of BSA's theatre faculty. Jali D plays the African djembe drum and uses rhythm and rhyme to engage students and teach them about math, reading, video games, the brain and more.

Maria Broom and The Village Bully were recently featured on WJZ. For more information about Maria Broom, visit www.mariabroom.com. This free event promises to be wonderful for kids of all ages.
