Director: Melvin Van Peebles
Paris, 1968, 87 mins.
Co-presented by Vaunita Goodman.

This black-and-white film written and directed by Melvin Van Peebles is based on a novel he wrote in French La Permission. The film tells the story of Turner (Harry Baird), a black American soldier stationed in France whose captain gives him a three-day pass just after he promotes him. On the first night, he meets Miriam, a Parisian shop clerk, at a club. They dance, talk, and fantasize about each other. Turner is amazed when she agrees to spend the weekend with him at a Normandy beach hotel. Romance ensues but it is complicated by the complexities of racism. Melvin Van Peebles also collaborated on the score with Mickey Baker and sings one of the two songs written for the film, "When My Number Gonna Hit”. $12, $10 mbrs. 7:30pm
