Lipitz Lecture with Gloria Chuku

Lipitz Lecture with Gloria Chuku

UMBC's Humanities Forum and Social Sciences Forum present the annual Lipitz Lecture, featuring Gloria Chuku, who will speak on Becoming Igbo in Nigeria and the Diaspora: A History of Ethnic Identity Formation and Negotiation.

The Igbo-speaking people of southeastern Nigeria constitute one of the largest ethno-linguistic groups in the country with an estimated population of more than 37 million people. The word “Igbo” refers to both the people and their language. The purpose of Professor Chuku’s research is to trace the history of Igbo ethnic identity formation, negotiation, and integration in Nigeria and in the Diaspora, and to explore the challenges, complexities, and dynamics of maintaining a collective Igbo identity in a pluralistic Nigerian society under increased globalization.

Gloria Chuku is professor and chair of Africana Studies with a specialty in African History. Her research interests focus on Igbo history and culture, gender studies, women in colonial and postcolonial political economies of Nigeria and Africa, ethnonationalisms and conflicts in Nigeria, and African nationalism and intellectual history. She is the author of Igbo Women and Economic Transformation in Southeastern Nigeria, 1900–1960 (Routledge, 2005), editor of The Igbo Intellectual Tradition: Creative Conflict in African and African Diasporic Thought (Palgrave Macmillan, 2013) and Ethnicities, Nationalities, and Cross-Cultural Representations in Africa and the Diaspora (Carolina Academic Press, 2015), and coeditor of Women and the Nigeria-Biafra War: Reframing Gender and Conflict in Africa (Lexington Books, 2020).

Admission is free.
