Commedia Dell’Arte: Mask and Archetypes in Comedy

Commedia Dell’Arte: Mask and Archetypes in Comedy

Mixing influences of a Renaissance-age tradition, modern theatre interpretations, and reimagining contemporary archetypes with comic masks.

Find the full skeleton of funny bones in your performance work through serious play. We will learn the traditional archetypes from the Italian Commedia Dell’Arte, train in mask performance, and use clown play and devising to create short original canovacchio. Test and develop audacious characters who are instantly recognizable to the audience, create comic “lazzi”, learn how comic masks facilitate the acting impulse, and make improvisation and devising work both fast and fruitful. This course requires that participants be in good health and ready for movement. No previous experience necessary. Registration closes on January 16th.
