MADBOOTS DANCE: GAY GUERRILLA / for Julius

“…took me where I had not been in dance theater.”
— Alastair Macaulay, The New York Times

UMBC presents MADBOOTS DANCE. Led by Jonathan Campbell and Austin Diaz, the queer, all-male company is known for its fearless athleticism and unashamed intimacy. Tackling topics related to male identity, the company was named “25 to Watch” by Dance Magazine who noted that Diaz and Campbell, “are making a unique mark on concert dance with highly original movement that pushes skill and stamina to the limit.”

The company will perform GAY GUERRILLA / for Julius, a 30-minute work is set to Julius Eastman’s relentless minimalist score of the same title. Compelled by Eastman’s life story, Campbell and Diaz bring his music into today’s social and political climate, re-painting an American image. This wild yet tender landscape brings the beauty and struggles of the queer community to the forefront through the company’s signature hyper-physicality and intimacy. The program will also include IRIS, a work-in-progress.
