Korean Movie Screening & Social: A Taxi Driver

Korean Movie Screening & Social: A Taxi Driver

Join us for the Baltimore Korean Movie Series in May, and the historical 1980s drama A Taxi Driver!

In May, 1980, Man-seob (Song Kang-ho) is a taxi driver in Seoul who lives hand-to-mouth, raising his young daughter alone after the loss of his wife. One day he hears about a foreigner who's willing to pay big money for a drive down to the city of Gwangju and back. Not knowing that the customer is a German journalist (Thomas Kretschmann) determined to investigate rumors of political protests and violent suppression, Man-seob eagerly takes the job and the two start off on their fateful journey.

Based on actual events, director Jang Hoon's A Taxi Driver (2017) was a huge box office hit upon release in 2017, evoking a painful but pivotal chapter in contemporary Korean history during the country's march to democratization. The film earned top prizes in Korea, including Best Film, Best Actor (Song Kang-ho), and Best Music at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and Best Film at the Daejong Film Awards.

This event is part of the Korean Cultural Center Washington, D.C.'s regional outreach presenting free screenings of milestone films at Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, in partnership with the Maryland Film Festival.

In Korean with English subtitles. 137 Minutes.

Light Korean food provided at 6:30 p.m. just before the film!
