Flatlands: Paintings By Hannah Leighton
*Opening Reception: Thursday, Jan. 25, 5:30–7:30 p.m., with a gallery talk at 6 p.m.
Artist Hannah Leighton of Baltimore showcases her contemporary paintings. Leighton says that her paintings are inspired by “the shapes of stories, sounds and memories.”
According to Leighton, “I begin each painting with a few swift movements of my foam roller—nothing is worse than a blank canvas. I build up translucent layers, providing a foundation. Carefully placed opaque shapes and lines react to the washy undercurrent beneath. The painting gains more opaque shapes and in time its personality reveals itself.”
Leighton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2015 and studied painting in Morocco at Green Olive Arts. She is co-founder and director of Baltimore’s Ballroom Gallery. www.hannahknightleighton.com
