This playreading meets bookclub invites you to grab a drink, take on a role in the play, and join actors around the table to read a script dealing with identity in America. Then we'll talk about the themes and their relevance to you and Baltimore. Octoroon's discussion will be facilitated by Faedra Chatard Carpenter, Associate Professor of Theatre Scholarship & Performance Studies at University of Maryland, and author of the book Coloring Whiteness: Acts of Critique in Black Performance.

If you want to read, show up at 5:30PM to get a part. The reading will begin at 6 (those who don't want to read are welcome to listen!).

The Play:
Judge Peyton is dead and his plantation Terrebonne is in financial ruins. Petyon’s handsome nephew George arrives as heir apparent and quickly falls in love with Zoe, a beautiful octoroon. But the evil overseer M’Closky has other plans – for both Terrebonne and Zoe. In 1859, a famous Irishman wrote this play about slavery in America. Now an American tries to write his own.
