Missy Raines & the New Hip - Based out of Nashville, TN, Missy Raines is considered to be one of the most respected, popular, and trailblazing figures in bluegrass today. A seven-time winner of the IBMA Bass player of the year award, she has backed greats such as Claire Lynch, Mac Weisman, Kenny Baker, and Peter Rowan. Raines now leads her own innovative and genre-bending band, The New Hip, which is a rich, jazz-tinged combination of her bluegrass roots and thick Americana.
The Morgan State University Chapel, Rev. Dr. Bernard Keels, Dean, presents The Seven Last Words of Christ, an oratorio by Théodore Dubois. This service has become a seasonal staple event in the community, having been presented annually on Good Friday for more than three decades. The music is provided by the Olton Singing Society of Baltimore, directed by Bruce Henderson. Also featured are students from Morgan State University as well as clerics from the Baltimore-Washington area. Please join us for a moving afternoon of music and scripture.
Exciting, exhilarating, and exhausting!” is probably the best (and most alliterative) way to describe the jazz duo of Holland & Coots. Brian Holland and Danny Coots began performing together in 2010 after spending decades individually on the jazz and ragtime circuits honing their skills on piano and drums, respectively. Since joining forces, they’ve been on a mission to introduce audiences all over the world to their style of music and fun. With a delightful mix of jazz, blues, stride, boogie, pop, and ragtime, Holland & Coots have created something for every taste.
The St. David’s Music Series continues on April 14 at 7:30 with a special musical offering entitled Music for Good Friday. This event weaves together text and music to create a reflective atmosphere at the crux of Holy Week, frequently including music that—due to its scope, difficulty, or mood—is rarely programmed in weekly services and liturgies. This year, the offering includes the mystical Tenebrae Responses by the infamous Renaissance Italian count, Carlo Gesualdo, presented by the Choir of St. David’s under the direction of Douglas Buchanan, Choirmaster and Organist.
Prepare for an intimate night of soulful singing, moving acoustic guitar, blues roots, and lively storytelling from two unique singer/songwriters.
