In the fall of 1814, thousands of people came together on Hampstead Hill to defend Baltimore from a British attack. Today, the former fortifications are located in Patterson Park and topped by the charming Patterson Park Pagoda. After a short climb up the Pagoda’s winding iron stairs, you’ll enjoy a singular view of East Baltimore and learn the story of the Battle of Baltimore and War of 1812.

Join for this exciting program in connection with The All American Synagogue that is part lecture, part workshop. Learn the basic steps of creating a Torah scroll, including how the letters are written and the rules governing the making of a Torah. Plus enjoy a hands on inspection of a Torah, mezuza and Tefillin. Finally, put into practice all you have learned by attempting to write in “Torah font” with a calligraphy pen.

“Volume Revisited” features 3-d structured paper works, and a selection of embellished oil-based monotype prints from the series “Between Rocks and a Hard Heart Place”. Organically inspired volumetric works explore contour and space with intricately manipulated ribbons of painted line. The visual range of the show is divergent and contemplative.

Nadia Hashimi, a pediatrician of Afghan descent, will read from her latest novel, which has its roots in today’s refugee crisis. When the Moon is Low tells the story of a single mother’s terrifying odyssey to escape the Taliban in war-torn Afghanistan and seek asylum in the West. With forged papers, the family faces dangerous border crossings, exhaustion and hunger in their effort to reach safety.

Summer art camp is designed for youth who love to spend the day making art. Each day, campers will participate in 3 workshops: Drawing & Painting, Sculpture & Clay and Digital Studio. They will have opportunities to learn about artists and art traditions, gain experience with a range of materials, develop skills and explore our campus all in a relaxed and supportive environment. Workshops are designed to inspire students of all abilities and are taught by artists and art teachers. Every session culminates with a art exhibition featuring artworks created during camp.
The Albin O. Kuhn Library Gallery presents The Glass Knife, curated by artists Stephen Bradley and Kathy Marmor, on display April 25 through June 30. The exhibition reflects on the work of Keith Porter, known as the “father of cell biology,” the title referring to the sharp wedged-shaped glass tool used by Porter to prepare tissue samples.
In this class, students explore the simplest of necklace structures, the chain, through a variety of techniques and materials. Students will learn about creating patterns and movement, as well as different methods for joining or constructing chain. Integrating clasps and findings will also be discussed. This class is appropriate for the beginning or more advanced student. Prerequisite: Intro to Metals + Jewelry or equivalent experience.

Jewelry is often associated with ornament and preciousness. This course focuses on the use of steel, typically considered a non-precious metal, in combination with precious metals for the fabrication of jewelry. Students learn to solder steel wire and sheet with gold and silver solder for construction as well as surface embellishment. Linear structures and armatures will be created through small scale wire welding. Chasing and texturing on steel, small scale forging, and color methods will also be explored.

Rings have many connotations: ceremonial, decorative, social, and religious. Through lectures, discussions and slide presentations, different uses for and concepts surrounding rings will be explored. Material covered in this course includes: sizing, fabrication, stone setting, forging, casting, and other ring making techniques. Each participant will make a series of rings which incorporate a combination of several materials and skills.
Prerequisite: Intro to Metals + Jewelry or equivalent experience.
